Following her meeting with University Management, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency Harriet Thompson, paid a visit to the office of the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Friday April 25, 2025.

The Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) is under the Artificial Intelligence for Development in Africa (AI4D) Multidisciplinary Labs project initiated by International Development Research Centre (IDRC). RAIL has been envisioned as a Maker Space that would develop talent in Data Science and Machine Learning to help bridge the widening skills gap needed to champion the Digital Economic Transformation agenda of Ghana and the Subregion.

Her Excellency Harriet Thompson was warmly welcomed by Professor Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of the RAIL Project, who introduced her to the project team. He stated that the activities in the Lab are specifically set to promote the digitalisation of products, processes, and services via innovative toolbox development for Renewable Energies, Health, Agriculture and Climate Change whilst using cases in close collaboration with local small and medium-scaled enterprises (SMEs) and governmental bodies.

Her Excellency praised the team’s work and underscored the importance of ethical and inclusive approaches to technological advancement, especially in developing contexts.

The visit concluded with a renewed sense of optimism and commitment toward deepening UK-Ghana academic and research collaborations for shared prosperity.
