On Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, a delegation from Tongmyong University, South Korea visited the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), as part of efforts to strengthen global collaboration in research and innovation. The visit, facilitated by the International Programmes Office (IPO), centered on exploring opportunities for a collaborative partnership aimed at developing innovative and ethical AI solutions to address pressing global challenges.
The Tongmyong University delegation led by Mr. Kang Kyung Su, 15th Chairman of the Tongmyong Educational Foundation comprised Dr. Eshetu Tefera Bekele, Assistant Professor at the Busan International College of Global Business, and Mr. Kim Joo Young, Administrator and Marketing Officer.
The delegation was welcomed by Professor Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of RAIL, who outlined the Lab’s vision of becoming a multidisciplinary hub where artificial intelligence is developed responsibly and harnessed as a force for good, directly supporting the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He highlighted RAIL’s strategic focus on applying AI to transformative sectors such as health, agriculture, energy, and assistive technologies.
As artificial intelligence continues to redefine the landscape of global innovation, RAIL, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), is positioning itself as a leading center for ethical AI research and development in Africa.
During the visit, RAIL researchers showcased impactful human-centered projects, including AI for rare disease diagnosis in infants, accent classification for inclusive technology, natural language processing for code-switching, and AI-powered assistive devices for the hearing and visually impaired.
The Delegation also seized the opportunity to visit the DIPPER Lab, a cutting-edge research facility located in KNUST, Ghana, dedicated to advancing the use of IoT, blockchain, and edge-intelligence computing to drive innovation in the food and agriculture industries.
The Tongmyong University delegation commended the practical and commercially viable nature of these research initiatives and expressed strong interest in future collaboration.
The visit concluded with a shared commitment to building a partnership that advances the responsible use of AI for improving the quality of life for community they serve.
