On Monday, June 9, 2025, a high-level delegation from Hubei University of Automotive Technology (HUAT), China, visited the College of Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The delegation included Professor Wang Xiao, President of HUAT; Professor Zhou Mingzhi, Deputy Director for Academic Affairs; Professor Wang Cheng; Professor Xiong Yongchen; Professor Liu Feng; and Professor Zhou Yuang.
The delegation was warmly received by Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, Provost of the College of Engineering, along with the Deans of the various faculties and Heads of Department. In his welcome address, Professor Nyarko presented a comprehensive overview of the College, highlighting its current population of 11,000 students, 3 faculties, 11 departments, 18 undergraduate programmes, and 69 postgraduate programmes.
He also touched on the College's major ongoing projects, including the Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Centre Kumasi (RWESCK), the Transport Research and Education Centre Kumasi (TRECK), the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), and the KNUST Engineering Education Project (KEEP).
Professor Zhou Yuang provided a detailed presentation on HUAT, emphasizing its academic strengths, accolades, and state-of-the-art laboratories that support cutting-edge research and innovation.
Speaking on behalf of KNUST’s International Programmes Office, Professor Daniel Duah, the Dean, noted the existing partnership between KNUST and HUAT, which led to the establishment of the Confucius Institute at KNUST - a center dedicated to language and cultural exchange but unique in its nature by reflecting the science and technology focus of KNUST.
Building on this partnership, both institutions expressed their interest in expanding collaborations, particularly in the field of automotive engineering. A key initiative discussed was the establishment of a Centre for Automotive Development at KNUST, envisioned as a hub for joint research that would yield mutual benefits.
Professor Wang Xiao expressed deep appreciation for the warm hospitality shown by the KNUST community. He emphasized that the Confucius Institute serves as a vital link between HUAT and KNUST, and he was hopeful that the strengthened collaboration would drive technological advancement in Ghana.
The visit concluded with productive discussions between faculty heads from both institutions, identifying specific areas for future cooperation. Professor Nyarko, reflecting on the outcomes, conveyed his strong optimism about the transformative potential of the partnership.
