Prof. Olga Ioanna Kalantzi, Professor at the Department of Environment, University of the Aegean, Greece, paid a courtesy call on the Management of IPO, KNUST, as part of her ongoing Erasmus+ Teaching Mobility at the University on Thursday, 12th February 2026.
During discussions, Prof. Kalantzi provided an overview of the University of the Aegean, describing it as the only island university in Greece, uniquely structured across six islands in the Aegean Sea. She highlighted that the Department of Environment was the first of its kind in Greece and played a pioneering role in establishing environmental science research in the country. Emphasing the institution’s strong commitment to international mobility, she stated that the University has intensified efforts to build partnerships globally, reflecting on the KNUST partnership.
She further explained that the collaboration between KNUST and the University of the Aegean, Greece, began nearly five years ago when she contacted Prof. Jonathan Nartey Hogarh, Department of Environmental Science, KNUST, after recognising similarities in their research areas. Taking advantage of the flexibility of the Erasmus+ programme, the partners have successfully implemented two rounds of mobility, facilitating staff and student exchanges
Discussions also focused on strengthening existing cooperation and exploring new avenues for collaboration, including joint research initiatives, co-supervision of graduate students, and the expansion of mobility opportunities under the Erasmus+ framework.
The Dean, Prof. Ekuadzi, expressed appreciation for the strong and growing collaboration between KNUST and the University of the Aegean, noting that the Erasmus+ partnership has provided meaningful academic and cultural exchange opportunities for both parties, significantly contributing to internationalisation. He commended the enthusiasm and academic quality of the MPhil students and how it has provided an avenue for quality education. He reaffirmed her of KNUST’s support and commitment to sustaining and expanding the partnership.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepening the KNUST and University of the Aegean partnership, leveraging the Erasmus+ platform to promote academic excellence, cross-cultural exchange, and impactful research collaboration.
