The Rwandan High Commission in Ghana, in collaboration with the Rwandan Community in Ghana, organized ‘Kwibuka29’, a commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis where a million innocent lives were lost. The event, under the theme ‘Remember: Unite. Renew’ was held at the Accra International Conference Centre on June 23, 2023 where the Rwandan Students Community in KNUST were privileged to be a part of.
Led by Mrs. Yvonne Baiden, Assistant Registrar at the International Programmes Office, the Rwandan Students Community comprising 23 students attended the ceremony during a 2-day visit to Accra.
Rwandans were joined by groups that included the Government of Ghana, UN Agencies, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Senior Military Officers, friends of the Rwandan Community and the media at the event. Present were Rtd. Major General Henry Kwami Anyidoho and Rtd. Major General Joseph Narh Adinkra, the Charge d’affaires of the High Commission of Rwanda in Ghana, Theophile Rurangwa, among others.
Highlights of the event included speeches by Sylvester Bellwine, Director for Africa in the Multilateral Bureau at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and Charles Abani, UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana.
Ms. Dimitrie Sissi Mukanyirigira, a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, in delivering her moving testimony to the audience on this solemn occasion, revealed some facts from her book titled’ Do not accept to Die’.
All Rwandans were encouraged to learn from this tragic past in order to lead with historical clarity with a sense of responsibility and accountability.
