On Friday, February 28, 2025, the Vice Chancellor of Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) in Zimbabwe, Professor Eddie Mwenje, accompanied by his assistant, Mr. Daniel Chihombori, visited Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)’s Department of Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat (EENT) at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). The delegation was warmly received by Dr. Med. Duah Mohammed, Head of the EENT Department, and Dr. Med. Akosua Agyemang Prempeh, Head of the Audiology Unit within the department.
During the visit, Professor Mwenje provided an overview of BUSE, emphasizing its focus on science education. Despite being a relatively young institution, having been established 25 years ago, BUSE is ranked among the top four universities in Zimbabwe. He highlighted the university’s successful Optometry programme, which was launched in partnership with the University of Cape Coast, and expressed interest in expanding their academic offerings. Specifically, Professor Mwenje shared plans to introduce an Audiology programme at BUSE. However, he noted that audiology remains an underdeveloped field in Zimbabwe, and the university currently lacks the necessary expertise to implement the programme independently. The purpose of the visit, therefore, was to explore potential collaborations with KNUST to develop and support this initiative.
Dr. Duah presented an overview of the EENT Department, outlining its key roles in student training, public service delivery, and advanced research. He explained that the department trains undergraduate students and also offers postgraduate programmes, including an MSc in Audiology and an MSc in Speech and Language Pathology. He further elaborated on the activities and services of the Audiology Unit, providing detailed insights into its operations and contributions to the field.
The visit concluded with a tour of the Audiology Unit and its facilities, allowing the delegation to observe the unit’s equipment and practices.
Also in attendance were Ms. Ernestine Oheneba Danso, Collaborations and Partnerships Officer, and Mr. Attah-Nyame Essampong, Visibility and Communications Officer, both from the International Programmes Office at KNUST.
