A team from Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly, KNUST Basic School and CLEAN Africa have called on the Dean of the International Programmes Office, Prof. Daniel Y.A Duah on Thursday July 20, 2023.
The team included: Mrs. Comfort Ofori-Appiah, Abuakwa South Municipal Director for Education; Mr. Kwame Amoako-Attah, Eastern Regional Manager for GIFEC; Ms. Adelaide Obenewaa Twum-Barima, Smart Sustainable Cities and Historical Heritage Secretariat, Mrs. Irene Nkansah, Head of KNUST Basic School, Mrs. Matilda Freda Marful, CLEAN-Africa e.V, together with 150 students drawn from basic schools in various communities in the Akyem Abuakwa Municipal Assembly on an exchange visit to KNUST and her Basic School focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM).
Following the active partnership between KNUST and Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, the International Programmes Office, Clean Africa and KNUST Basic School arranged and coordinated the exchange visit which was based on the STEAM Programme.
CLEAN-Africa stands for Community Level Environmental Awareness Network Foundation-Africa. The organization intends to actively facilitate and promote the adoption of policies, methods and tools to accelerate the movement towards a global sustainable built environment.
The Dean revealed to the group that KNUST applied for the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for sustainability along with over 1300 universities across the globe and after years of strategic investments, emerged as the best University in the world for SDG 4 (Quality Education). He also added that KNUST appreciates the sustainability agenda because it was important for future generations to be educated on sustainable ways in order to impact the country and humanity.
Mrs. Ofori-Appiah indicated how impressed they were with the display of STEAM activities at the KNUST Basic School and the work of CLEAN Africa Team and hoped that schools in their Municipality would be supported with similar projects, laboratories and facilities. She hoped that they had spent a much longer time at KNUST to explore in detail various STEAM based units of the university.
Mr. Amoako-Attah also commented that as a science person, he really enjoyed the tour of the art based displays by the Basic School and Faculty of Art. He was surprised to learn the diverse range of subjects and fields, especially Ceramics.
Prof. Duah then interacted with the students from Akyem Abuakwa Basic Schools to receive feedback on how their visit went. The students expressed how happy they were with the visit. One student said she found the visit to be entertaining and educative to see her peers being capable of showcasing their robotics skills. Another stated that he enjoyed the tour of the University and the entire day.
Also present at the meeting were Mr. Eric Oti Attah, Deputy Head, KNUST JHS; Mrs. Nana Oye Woodiez, Deputy Head, KNUST Primary, Dr. Alexander Boakye Marful, and Ms. Theresa Joy Kamassah, Collaborations/Partnerships Officer at the IPO.
