A team of two, comprising Dr. Elena McCarthy, Science Director for Maritime Domain Awareness at the Office of Naval Research Global in London, UK and Dr. Emily Shroyer from the Office of Naval Research in Washington, USA paid a courtesy call on the Dean of the International Programmes Office, Professor Daniel Y.A. Duah on August 15, 2023.

Dr. McCarthy informed the Dean that the purpose of the visit is a thrilling kickoff of a groundbreaking project that the Office of Naval Research is generously funding within the College of Science, KNUST. She indicated that the project intends to protect the coast and heritage of Keta in the Volta Region through Integrated Geophysical Techniques. She added that the team is in KNUST to introduce exciting research and capacity building opportunities, fostered by the Office of Naval Research. The team is incredibly grateful to have Dr. Cyril D. Boateng, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Physics at the helm of the project, leading the way with his expertise and dedication.

On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and Management of the University, Prof. Duah welcomed them to KNUST, the best university in the world for SDG Goal 4, Quality Education, according to the Times Higher Education in 2023. He indicated that part of the reasons why KNUST is able to stay at the top is because of the Quality partnerships she has with friends like the Office of Nana Research and that he has no doubt about the capacity of the KNUST team under the leadership of Dr. Boateng to exceed expectations. He expressed his excitement about the visit and mentioned that KNUST has a student population of 89,017 and a very beautiful and vibrant campus. Such research offers opportunities for faculty and students to develop further skill set necessary for practice. He added that KNUST looks forward to future engagements with the Office of Naval Research.

The team that called on the Dean included the following members of the stellar project team, all from the Department of Physics: Professor David D. Wemegah, Dr. Michael E.K. Donkor, Dr. Akyana Britwum and Ms. Linda Nana Esi Aduku, OGR Officer at the College of Science.

At the meeting was Mrs. Yvonne Baiden, an Assistant Registrar of the International Programmes Office.
