Following their initial engagement with the International Programmes Office on Thursday, April 17, 2025, a delegation from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, continued their visit to the Office of the Provost of the College of Health Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The delegation comprised Assistant Professor Mizuho Fukushige, Vice-Director of the Bureau of Global Initiatives, and Professor Masao Ichikawa, a faculty member in Global Public Health at the Institute of Medicine.
During the visit, Assistant Professor Fukushige shared that, through a grant from the Japanese Government, students from KNUST’s School of Nursing and Midwifery had previously benefited from a study opportunity at the University of Tsukuba. Following the success of that cohort, the Institute of Medicine has expressed strong interest in expanding collaborations with other faculties within the College of Health Sciences. This forms part of the University of Tsukuba’s broader global partnership initiative.
She further noted that the University of Tsukuba prefers to establish Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) at the faculty level, rather than signing a general MoU between the two universities. This approach allows for more focused and effective collaboration tailored to the specific academic and research interests of each faculty.
Professor Christian Agyare, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, warmly welcomed the delegation and provided an overview of the College’s structure, activities, and academic priorities. After detailed presentations and discussions with the Deans of the various faculties, a consensus was reached to pursue further engagement.
Professor Agyare directed that the contact details of the respective Deans be shared with the delegation to facilitate follow-up virtual meetings. These discussions will define specific courses, research areas, and the potential number of exchange students from each faculty, while preparations are made towards executing faculty-level MoUs.
Mrs. Yvonne Baiden, Senior Assistant Registrar at the International Programmes Office, reaffirmed the Office’s commitment to supporting the process and working closely with stakeholders to bring the proposed agreements to fruition.
Also in attendance were Mrs. Regina Nuako, College Registrar; the Deans of the various Faculties and other faculty members within the College of Health Sciences; and representatives from the International Programmes Office.
